Meaning of Christmas

She closed her blog with the question:

"What does Christmas mean to you?"

Thought provoking. Prompting a flying investigation through memories of many, over years and years . . .

Impossible to summarize them — but one in particular emerges:

I remember a Christmas — about 1974 — Mom and Pop drove to Victoria from San Antone — Christmas morning, there was much unwrapping and opening of presents, from each to everyone. Through it all my dog Prissy sat Sphinx-like, watching silently and intently.

When all the “people” presents were dispensed, I took the one remaining wrapped gift from under the tree and presented it to Prissy. Without hesitation, and demonstrating absolute, complete understanding, she unwrapped it and took possession of her gift — a toy for her pleasure. When she had the gift securely “in hand” she turned to gaze into my eyes, and silently said “Thank You.”
We mere humans sat in rapt amazement at her behavior — waiting so patiently for her turn, then proceeding so expertly.

I miss that dog..
